Welfare and integrity
The Commission controls, supervises and regulates greyhound racing and develops policies and standards to protect animal welfare and the integrity of greyhound racing. The Commission administers the Greyhound Racing Rules and the NSW Greyhound Welfare Code of Practice.
Animal Welfare Committee
The Greyhound Industry Animal Welfare Committee was established under the Greyhound Racing Act 2017 to provide advice to the Commission on greyhound welfare matters. The Committee’s membership is prescribed by the Act and includes veterinarians as well as representatives of RSPCA NSW, GRNSW and the greyhound racing industry.
Registration
The Greyhound Racing Act 2017 requires that any greyhound kept in connection with greyhound racing must be registered. Through the eTrac system, the Commission tracks all registered greyhounds to protect their welfare.
Similarly, the Act requires that persons who conduct activities connected with greyhound racing must be registered. The Commission manages applications for registration and is required to ensure that any person who is registered as a greyhound racing industry participant is a fit and proper person to be registered.
